After Anmeldung: where your German tax ID goes

The tax ID usually follows registration by post, but payroll deadlines do not always wait for the envelope.

One number that stays with you

The German tax identification number, often shortened to Steuer-ID or IdNr, is assigned to an individual and generally remains the same for life. If you previously lived in Germany, you do not receive a new identity just because you return or change address.

After a first registration, the Federal Central Tax Office normally sends the number to the registered address. Delivery can take time, which is why your name needs to be visible on the letterbox and accessible to the postal service.

When the letter does not arrive

Use the official retrieval service rather than sending identity documents to an unofficial intermediary. For privacy reasons, the number is ordinarily communicated by post to your registered address. Your local tax office may also be able to help after checking your identity.

Tell payroll that you have registered and are waiting for the number. Ask what temporary handling they use and what deadline applies. This is an employer process question, not something a relocation adviser can decide for them.

Do not confuse it with a tax number

A Steuernummer may be issued by a tax office for tax returns or self-employed activity. It is not interchangeable with the personal tax ID. If you are beginning freelance work, get tax advice about registration, VAT, invoicing, and your filing duties rather than assuming the letter after Anmeldung completes the process.
