Opening a German bank account: compare the document rules first

An attractive fee can be irrelevant if the bank cannot verify your documents or serve your immediate payment needs.

Begin with eligibility

Before comparing card colours or welcome offers, read each bank’s accepted identification, residence, and address requirements. Some providers support video identification for a wide range of passports; others require a branch visit, a residence title, or proof of German registration.

Ask whether the account provides a German IBAN, how quickly incoming salary payments can be received, and whether the issued card works for the purchases you expect. Germany still has places that prefer girocard or cash, even though debit-card acceptance has improved.

Calculate the ordinary month

Look beyond the headline account fee. Consider conditions for free account management, cash withdrawals, replacement cards, foreign-currency conversion, international transfers, and paper statements. A branch network may be valuable if you need cash services or in-person support; it may be unnecessary if your documents and habits fit a remote provider.

Keep control of the application

Apply directly through the institution’s official channel. Do not share login credentials or allow a relocation helper to operate the account. If verification fails, ask the bank for the reason and accepted alternatives. An independent orientation session can help you compare published requirements, but only the bank decides whether to accept an application.

Need this mapped to your dates?

A relocation session turns general guidance into a practical sequence for your address, employment start, and appointment availability.
