Anmeldung from a Berlin sublet: what to clarify before you move
The rental contract is not the key document people assume it is. Start by identifying who can confirm your move-in.
The confirmation matters more than the label on the tenancy
A sublet does not automatically prevent Anmeldung. The practical question is whether the person providing the accommodation can issue a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung that truthfully records your move-in. This may be the owner, a property manager, or a main tenant acting as the housing provider.
A rental agreement and a housing-provider confirmation serve different purposes. Berlin’s registration office normally asks for the latter. Before transferring a deposit, ask directly whether registration is possible and who will sign the confirmation.
Check the details before the appointment
The address, move-in date, names of residents, and housing provider’s details should be complete and consistent. If children or a spouse are registering, check which family records the official service page lists. Foreign civil-status documents may raise separate questions about originals, translations, or authentication.
Treat refusal as a warning
If a person offering a long-term room insists that Anmeldung is forbidden, do not accept a vague explanation. There can be legitimate limits in short stays, but avoiding registration can also point to an unauthorised sublet or an unwilling housing provider. Seek tenant or legal advice where the arrangement appears improper.
Official requirements can change. Review Berlin’s current service portal before your Bürgeramt appointment rather than relying only on an old checklist.
